Difference between revisions 21 and 22

**Eevi Charlotte Helvig-Norgaard** (Helvig by birth, Norgaard by marriage; born 311) is a figure of the C9 universe, one of the young people who formed the House of Confidence on Aerogaea 347n, and its scout. She is a phase-shift variant, and moves by dispersing to particle and reassembling, which the House used for reconnaissance, for pathfinding and for crossing distances nobody else could cross in a morning.

 

 

Eevi is in ten of the nineteen chapters of *The Glass House* and *The Silent Decade*.

 

## Early life

 

Eevi was born in year 311. The register records her first as Amaryllis's sister, and the relation organises most of what follows: much of who she is in the early chapters was built to keep her sister steady.

 

## The Klak Grove

 

The grove chapters introduce her by sound, or by the absence of it. Marcus can tell her footstep on a rope bridge forty feet up from her jumping, and both from her simply appearing somewhere she had not been. She moves through space with a tidiness that borders on rudeness[1].

 

On the morning *The Glass House* opens she had crossed the mountains and back for breakfast. She arrived at the base of Big T out of compressed air, with the sound of nothing becoming something quickly, holding three paper bags and looking like someone who had been at it much longer than she planned. Twenty-three minutes of that morning are unaccounted for, and nobody asked[1]. [[life/sienna-astrid-helvig|Sienna]] came down from the branches, sat beside her, said nothing, and put a clay cup of the tea of rebirth in her hands. Eevi looked at it, looked at the bags, looked back at the tea, and drank[1].

 

The waiting is the part she could never explain to anyone outside the House. She could feel the wanting and the careful holding back, and the House had settled somewhere along the way on the principle that some things have to be offered before they can be asked for[2].

 

The jumps have a consequence in the world, not in her body: they are detected. [[life/chryssander-randolf-lyall-helvig|Chryssander]] flags it early, saying her jump that morning was sooner than he expected and she will start registering[3].

 

In the arena on the last day she was matched against [[life/samantha-grace-albert-nakayama|Sam]]. Eevi wanted close range; Sam had the Sage73. They jumped back at the same instant on the same instinct, and then Sam was inside the pipework before Eevi finished her first read of the floor, working the angles until she found the one gap that gave her both cover and a clean line. She put the sights on Eevi's face and fired without hesitating. Eevi did not move[4].

 

## The Great Plateau

 

On the plateau she is the one reading terrain. She sees the geometry of a thing before anyone names it, calls the movement under the sand, and is already at the edge while the others are still deciding[5].

 

Her hardest chapter is the eleventh, conducted over a comm from four hundred kilometres south while [[life/sienna-astrid-helvig|Sienna]] is inside the facility. She speaks in the voice she uses when she has finished a calculation and is choosing how to deliver it, tells her not to activate anything else, and then, quieter, that they are not guests there. Behind her silence on the line there is only wind[6].

 

By the twelfth chapter she is in a chair performing cooperation, with the expression of a person who has done many things she did not choose and has got good at performing them[7].

 

She came through the wall rather than the route to tell Amaryllis it was done, hands still cycling at the edges[8]. She came over the ridge afterwards carrying Amaryllis's arm, running on something that was not fuel, flickering at the shoulders and forearms, and said they needed to move. Her voice after a phase run is flat and precise and efficient, borrowed clarity spending itself before the tiredness lands[9].

 

## Marriage and children

 

Eevi married [[life/marcus-norgaard|Marcus Norgaard]] in the years after the displacement, in a small wartime ceremony.

 

What she holds about him is not his strength. In a world of social lies she has to decode by effort, he is the one thing that does not change, and he is the room where she can put the analysis down.

 

 

## Physiology

 

Eevi's molecular structure is looser than baseline: her bonds permit self-dispersion and reassembly, so she crosses ground as a particle stream and arrives whole. Her joints and tendons are reinforced for the snap of re-materialising, which is what stops the stop from injuring her.

 

She is built long-limbed and lean with a high proportion of fast-twitch fibre, for velocity rather than for taking impact. During dispersion her perception runs at the speed she is travelling, which is how she navigates complex geometry while dispersed. Her vision is 20/10, and she uses it the way she uses everything else, filtering the field down to weak points and routes.

 

Teleportation is expensive and she eats immediately after a run. Years of it leave a mark: in later life the joints ache and she moves slower, and sees more.

 

## Character

 

She reads a room as a diagram. Exits, cover, blind spots, the fastest line from problem to solution, all at once. Crying and shouting she filters out as noise that slows the read, which means she misses sarcasm and misses feelings, not from indifference but from triage.

 

The smiling and the quick talk are a script she runs, because it disarms people and gets her through the social part faster. When her energy drops the script stops: she stops smiling, drops the filler, and speaks in flat commands. That is the version of her that is not performing.

 

Her whole early personality was built around Amaryllis, and the later steadiness came with Marcus. She smiles less as she gets older and means it more.

 

## Family
