**Marcus Norgaard** (born 311) is a figure of the C9 universe, recorded as homo sapiens / strain 33a chimera, one of the young people who formed the House of Confidence on Aerogaea 347n. He came out of time-displaced construct (sent by "confidence") and terrestrial adaptation.
Marcus is recorded for 33a hybrid physiology (elasticity & growth). His muscle and skin are non-Newtonian. Under sudden stress, the tissue hardens; under slow stress, it stretches. He is a human shock absorber. Under adrenaline he his body does not fatigue in the traditional sense. It converts combat stress into increased muscle density. The longer the fight, the stronger he becomes. His size his sheer surface area functions as a physical shield for smaller allies. His geometry lets him wield axechucks — momentum-based weapons that would dislocate a normal person's shoulder.
The record follows him across 3 periods of life, from year 330 onward. In the last of them he is recorded as workshop master.
Marcus appears in 14 of the 19 chapters written so far, beginning with The Glass House, chapter 1[1].
**Marcus Norgaard** (born 311) is a figure of the C9 universe, one of the young people who formed the House of Confidence on Aerogaea 347n, and the one the rest of them treated as the wall. He is a 33A chimera, and the records give his origin as a time-displaced construct sent by Confidence, adapted to terrestrial life. He is known by the glowing blue "3" on his shoulder and by the scar across his right cheek.

He was nineteen in year 330, when the Klak Grove was destroyed and the House was driven onto the Great Plateau[1]. He later married [[life/eevi-charlotte-helvig-norgaard|Eevi Charlotte Helvig-Norgaard]], and they had eight children. He practised medicine, ran the workshop, and led in the field, and the record consistently shows him doing all three by the same method: he treats a body, his own included, as a problem that can be solved.

The two books covering these years were written from inside them, *The Glass House* by [[life/leinder-byron|Leinder Byron]] and *The Silent Decade* by [[life/eon|Eon]]. Marcus appears throughout the first.

## Early life

Marcus Norgaard was born in year 311. He was 19 years old in 330, the year the Klak Grove was destroyed. The records give his origin as time-displaced construct (sent by "confidence") / terrestrial adaptation. His development is recorded as extended vitality (33a dna slows cellular decay, allowing him to maintain "prime" physique longer than baseline humans).
Marcus was born in year 311. His memory has logged everything since he was eight: every face, every sound[2]. The fight with the gang known as the Lost Boys belongs to that early period, before the years the books cover; when he is asked about it later he answers without hesitation, says they fought them and the gang disbanded a few days after, and moves on[2].

## Guardian of the squad (330–339)
He came to the grove young and had been there at least three years by the opening of *The Glass House*. He knew the light through the klak leaves at five in the morning, because he had woken early enough to see it once and then every morning since[1].

His standing at this time was guardian of the squad / survivalist. Physically, "The Titan." Jacked, defined, but covered in fresh scars. What defines him in this period is c9. He is their father, mother, and wall.
## The Klak Grove

## Field leader (340–349)
The chapters set in the grove show a settled life and a man who has organised himself around other people. He climbs down at dawn for morning exercises, and when his shoulder objects he does not mention it[1]. He and [[life/chryssander-randolf-lyall-helvig|Chryssander]] work on something structural at the base of Big T while [[life/samantha-grace-albert-nakayama|Sam]] cleans the rifle she took apart on the day she was given it[1]. He helped plumb the eight klak-wood shower cabins that run on water from the River Rofdon[3]. He climbs in a way that is neither careful nor careless, and he can fill a silence without saying anything[4].

His standing at this time was field leader / master craftsman. Physically, heavier. The definition softens into "Powerlifter" bulk (Functional Mass). The "3" tattoo is stretched over massive deltoids. What defines him in this period is Eevi. The record notes (Partner/Spouse dynamic). He is learning to let someone guard him.
When [[life/eevi-charlotte-helvig-norgaard|Eevi]] tests carrying other people through a displacement, Sam reports nausea, [[life/akio-nakayama|Akio]] reports nothing, and Marcus says "interesting" and means it[4].

## Later years (350 onward)
He fought in the arena on the House's last day in the grove, against Villgor, on a white floor chosen to remove any advantage that depends on grip. The crowd was for Villgor; most of them had not seen Marcus fight. He threw his axe, ducked the two thrown back, closed the distance in four steps, put a kick into the hip and three clean shots into the face that followed. When Villgor went for the tail grab, Marcus let go before it closed, and Villgor hit the floor. Then Marcus offered his hand[5].

His standing at this time was workshop master / advisor. Physically, his hair is gray, but the 33A DNA prevents muscle atrophy. He moves slower, but hits harder. What defines him in this period is watching the children he raised surpass him.
## The Great Plateau

## Abilities
After the grove fell, the House reorganised on the plateau and Marcus was given the materials for the shelter[6]. On the descent he went first and did not hesitate, sliding the tight sections and jumping switchback to switchback, into the cloud cover before most of the others had found their footing[7].

The mechanism on record is 33a hybrid physiology (elasticity & growth).
[[life/rad-albert|Rad Albert]] made an observation about him during the shelter months that the record keeps: Marcus is incapable of deciding to stand still while someone he is responsible for is out of sight, so he stands in doorways instead. Technically moving. Technically not[8].

The record notes mnemonic Sovereignty. (The ability to manipulate/erase memories in others and perfectly recall his own). The effect answers to sustained combat / trauma. Strength scales with duration. The cost of it is sensory disconnect & the black box. Hyperthymesia. He cannot forget. Every scream, every failure, every moment of torture is as fresh today as it was 20 years ago. He is his own physician. Because he has no "Check Engine Light" (Pain), he must manually audit his body after every fight. He treats his own survival as a logistical problem: sewing his own stitches and calculating blood volume loss with zero emotional reaction, purely to keep the "Siege Engine" functional for the family.
The device recovered from the cache was BNCY-adjacent but carried no stamp, and Rad recognised the frequency signature from equipment that had been at the first shelter three years earlier without authorisation. Somebody had run a parallel operation six months ahead of them. Marcus was quiet for a long moment[8].

### Novice
In the ghost operation he waited out a forty-minute question by deciding it did not matter which answer was right, and opened the case to find the Violet Power Cell in matte-black foam, its glow pulsing at irregular intervals[9].

Relies on raw durability and pain suppression. Fighting style is brutal and direct. Memory wipes are crude/blunt.
When the charge went off on the plateau he took the pressure wave with his back turned and his body between it and the others, without deciding to, the way he does things[10]. What he said afterwards, quietly, was that they hold the gate[10].

### Mastery
## Medicine

Utilizes his elastic joints to create impossible angles of attack. Memory manipulation becomes surgical (can remove specific traumas from allies).
Marcus is a surgeon, and the reason is in the injury rather than in the vocation. His pain reception is severed, a trauma response, so he feels pressure and temperature but not pain, and he runs his own body on instrument rules: after every fight he performs a conscious visual audit, looking for blood, for shivering, for pallor, calculating fluid loss and sewing his own stitches with no emotional reaction at all. He has no warning signal, so he built a procedure to replace it.

### Decline/Shift
His recall does the rest. Treating a patient, he retrieves his own matching injury and relives it, which makes him fast and exact and gives him a reason to finish quickly. He does not describe symptoms vaguely. He says tensile failure, or fluid loss, and cross-references against thousands of remembered injuries.

Speed decreases, but "Bounciness" remains. He becomes a stationary point of defense that cannot be moved.
He studies medicine to master the thing that ruined him. A screaming patient starts his own record playing; a healed and quiet one lets him close the file.

## Physiology

Marcus is a 33A chimera, built for absorption and leverage. His musculature is non-Newtonian: under sudden load the tissue hardens, under slow load it stretches, so he functions as a shock absorber. Sustained combat does not fatigue him in the ordinary way but converts stress into density, and he is stronger at the end of a long fight than at the start. His surface area is itself cover for smaller people standing behind him, and the geometry of his joints lets him swing axechucks, momentum weapons that would take an ordinary shoulder out of its socket.

33A slows cellular decay, so he holds a prime physique long past the point others lose it. In age his hair greys and his speed falls, but the muscle does not waste and he hits harder than he did.

His recall is total and permanent, and it does not distinguish between what is worth keeping and what is not. Every failure and every scream is as present to him now as it was twenty years ago.

He is also recorded as capable of working on memory in others, crudely at first and later with precision, to the point of removing a specific trauma from someone who is carrying it.

## Character

His perception runs standard / reactive. He does not see slow motion, but his hyperthymesia lets him instantly reference every fight he has ever had, predicting enemy movements from pattern. He reads body language he reads micro-expressions and tension instantly. His pain reception is manually severed — trauma response. He feels pressure and temperature but not pain. He operates on instrument flight rules: intellectually calculating damage he cannot feel. After a fight he audits hisself: because he has no pain signal, he runs a conscious visual check after every fight. He is looking for blood, shivering (shock), pallor. He treats his own survival as a logistical problem. In diagnosis, when treating a patient, his hyperthymesia retrieves his own matching injury from memory. He doesn't feel their pain; he relives his own. This makes him a fast, precise surgeon who fixes quickly to end the flashback. His recall is perfect autobiographical record. Every sensory input filed and never deleted. He does not use vague terms like "it hurts" — he uses structural terms like tensile failure or fluid loss. He cross-references symptoms against a memory database of thousands of injuries. He breaks only when the threat to Sienna or Celestine exceeds a threshold, the sociable persona dissolves. He becomes non-verbal.
He reads tension and micro-expression instantly, and he watches faces the way other people watch doors. His fidget, working his fingers, means he is running scenarios; the people who know him read it and wait[5].

Marcus studies medicine to master the thing that ruined him (Pain). He fixes others not just out of kindness, but to silence the "noise." A screaming patient triggers his own torture memories; a healed, quiet patient allows him to close the file and find peace. Early in life he held to a lie about hisself: "If I am the strongest thing in the room, no one I love will get hurt." / "I don't need help; help is for the weak.". Later he came to hold the opposite: "A wall that stands alone eventually crumbles. Even the strongest need a foundation." He isn't just a wall; he is the mason who maintains it. He treats his body with the same cold, professional care he gives his weapons—not out of vanity, but out of necessity. As a young man, his voice was boisterous, loud, "Bro-energy" to cover the trauma. In his prime it became warm, deep, reassuring. The voice of a father figure. In old age it turned gravelly, soft, and infrequent. He speaks in proverbs and grunts.
He decides before he speaks. The record catches the expression more than once: the look of a man who has already made the decision and is giving the other person a moment to arrive at it[11].

What he believed early was that if he were the strongest thing in the room nobody he loved would be hurt, and that needing help was weakness. What he came to instead was that a wall standing on its own eventually comes down.

When the threat to [[life/sienna-astrid-helvig|Sienna]] or [[life/celestine-elsa-helvig|Celestine]] passes a certain point, the sociable version of him disappears and he stops speaking.

## Appearances

Marcus is present in 14 of the 19 chapters written so far.

- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-1-the-klak-grove|The Glass House, chapter 1]] — Marcus had noticed this the first morning he'd woken up early enough to see it, three years ago, and he'd noticed it every morning since.[1]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-2-the-glitch|The Glass House, chapter 2]] — She heard footsteps on the branch below — recognizable before she looked, because Marcus had a way of climbing that wasn't quite careful and wasn't quite careless, somewhere in the middle.[2]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-3-the-lab-and-the-threat|The Glass House, chapter 3]] — Marcus was already carrying Chrys's jacket, the one he'd pressed to the wound, with the careful purpose of a man who knew which problems he could solve.[3]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-4-rise-and-shine|The Glass House, chapter 4]][4]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-5-the-first-of-senetis|The Glass House, chapter 5]] — Marcus was right behind him, knocking on each door.[5]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-6-the-arena|The Glass House, chapter 6]] — She turned to stand by Marcus, who was doing something with his fingers at the big door — a fidget she recognized, which meant he was running scenarios.[6]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-7-the-generator|The Glass House, chapter 7]] — After Marcus's dinner, which had been quiet and warm and the kind of meal that happens when a group of people has been together long enough to know what everyone needs without being told.[7]
- [[pages/glass-house-chapter-8-the-cave-and-the-guide|The Glass House, chapter 8]] — Marcus dropped through the trapdoor before the last footstep faded.[8]
