Celestine Elsa Helvig (born c. 326) is a figure of the C9 universe, the younger of the Helvig twins, and the one the record calls the sword to her sister's shield. She is a Lyall-Helvig chimera. Her records place her origin in a future timeline around year 350, in a post-collapse sector.

She is the daughter of Chryssander Randolf Lyall-Helvig and Amaryllis Rigel Helvig, and the twin of Sienna Astrid Helvig. She carried the Helvig name from birth. She was called Celly as a child.

In the grove

She arrived places before anyone remembered inviting her, carrying a piece of fruit, with her boots on the wrong feet and her sister following to switch them^[1]. She wore mismatched socks as a child and mismatched armour plating as an adult, which is the same habit at two scales.

When fifty armed men came into the grove, she and Sienna were forty metres away running circles in the grass, entirely unconcerned with the arrival^[2].

She went first into the tesseract when Chryssander told her to go ahead^[3]. In the dark her sister's hand found her wrist and hers was already there^[3].

The children of the House

The twins were raised inside the House of Confidence by people who did not know, for years, whose children they were. What Celestine came to understand later, and what the record marks as the turn in her life, is that the team she had grown up admiring were her parents, and that she had met them before she lost them.

The facility and after

On the ghost operation she watched the northern approach while Sienna worked the perimeter with her eyes closed, and it was Celestine who said the thing nobody wanted said: he knew we were coming^[4].

She was quiet after the extraction, quieter than usual. She came and sat near Marcus. She does not speak into quiet; the quiet has to be offered first, and Sienna had been offering it since they arrived^[5].

Physiology

Celestine reads the present faster than anyone around her. She does not see ahead; she takes in micro-movement, a tensed muscle, a shift of gaze, and answers it. She is a counter-puncher: she does not begin fights, she finishes them before the swing completes.

Her skin adapts to the environment it is in. In vacuum the pores seal and the surface hardens. In heat the pores open and sweat flashes off her, which is where the steam on her breath comes from.

She is built like her father, athletic, with her mother's compactness.

Character

Her filtering is almost closed. To get through what she got through she learned to strip the emotional content out of what she sees: a trap rather than a danger, calories rather than food. Her reasoning is binary and it is survival reasoning. If I scream they find me. If I stay quiet I live.

In the early years she is the trouble and Sienna is the repair. In the last part of the record the two of them are described as finally aligned, the sword and the shield working as one thing.

Celestine is the daughter of Chryssander Randolf Lyall-Helvig and Amaryllis Rigel Helvig, and the twin sister of Sienna Astrid Helvig.
