Inquiry into Observed Species and Threat Classification is a document by Sienna Astrid Helvig, commissioned by BNCY. It gives a way of naming a species, a study of how minds and bodies differ, and an index of what had been met by the time of writing.

BNCY asked for a threat index. What it received puts threat in the last field.


Preface

The first thing I want to say is that this is not a weapons manual. I am aware of what my name is on, and I am aware of what institution commissioned it. I wrote it anyway because someone has to, and because the alternative is that we keep sending soldiers into contact situations without any framework for understanding what they are looking at.

What follows is how I think about the mind and body of a species. Not as a threat. As a life.

Naming

We have been naming species by how they made us feel when we met them. That is how we ended up with a word for a whole people that means the shapeless thing out of the dark, and it is how a name coined in contempt becomes the only word an index has.

What follows is meant to replace that. It is built to four rules.

It has to be readable. Anyone holding the designation should be able to say what the thing is without a reference book. The point of a name is to carry the thing to somebody who has not met it.

Each position answers one question. The fields do not blur into each other. This is how climate is written, and it is why a three-letter climate code tells you more than a paragraph.

It has to be constructible. Meeting something new, a person in the field must be able to build its designation without permission from anyone. Chemists have had this for a century: a name from which the structure can be rebuilt, and a structure from which the name can be rebuilt.

It must be able to say that we do not know. Every field carries a value for unestablished. A system with no way of recording ignorance produces confident nonsense, and confident nonsense about a species is how contact goes wrong.

The four fields

A designation is three characters and a word: origin, form, mind, and standing.

First: origin. Where the life began, not where we found it.

Fourth: standing. What we are to each other, written as a word because it changes: ally, neutral, hostile, unknown, or changed where it has moved and the date of the move is recorded beside it.

Standing carries a date. A designation without one is out of date by definition, and the field is the only one in the system that is nobody's property but ours.

Threat order

The threat-order scale, which measures a being against one standard person as Order-1, is retained because it was asked for. It is placed last because it is the least informative thing that can be said about anyone. An Order-4 that will talk to you is a smaller problem than an Order-1 that will not.

I have read that pair of lines many times. The first field is the one nobody checks.

The Echo-Bound of WPU-3710

M s 1, neutral.

Workforce Planet Unit 3710 was a planetwide manufacturing hub, called the Grinder by the people who worked it, and it held dozens of species brought there for what their bodies could do: humans, heavy-gravity dwellers, multi-limbed assemblers.

About fifty years ago there was an industrial accident. The official account is a reactor breach and a toxic plague. What it left is a quarantined rust world under a smog of phasing particles, and a sickness in which a body's cells attempt to exist in two times at once. Those who have it describe being torn apart by the wind in a still room.

Leinder arrived afterwards and offered the only cure. The Anchor Suits are heavy, lead-lined and pressurised, carrying a crude tesseract stabiliser that generates a field holding the wearer's atoms together. The sound they make is the stabiliser venting. They cannot be removed.

What that produced is a people. The six-armed bind their extra limbs against the torso to fit the shell. The tall stoop permanently. They move with the same gait and speak with the same synthesised voice, and they are no longer called by the names of the species they were born into. They are the Echo-Bound, and their unity was manufactured by pain.

They are filed as made, because the accident and the cure between them produced a people that did not exist before.

The Consensus

U f 1, hostile.

The E1s are not a swarm. They are a structure, with a population in the billions, and they hold to a single collective frequency they call the Alignment. Remaining part of that society means remaining at that frequency.

The Universal Stewardship Index is theirs. It is presented as a ranking of species. It is an inventory. The lower tiers exist as long as they produce value; the middle tier is permitted power under supervision; the E1s sit outside their own scale.

An E1 who drifts is not killed, because killing wastes what they are. They are corrected. A specialised group overpowers the target, scours the memories and the personality, and returns the emptied body to the lower tiers with false memories in place. It is a sentence rather than an execution: the corrected are made to live as the thing they had considered themselves above.

Two are recorded. John Lyall is described as playing with his food. Byron tried to become a king of the people below rather than an administrator of them, which broke the separation their structure rests on.

On the study of minds that are not ours

This is the working half of the document. The designation says what a thing is. This says how to look at one.

How a mind works

Every mind I have ever encountered — human, Voidomorphian, or the deep-pressure thinkers of WPU-3710 — runs on variations of the same three things. I call them pace, filter, and connection. They are not metaphors. They are biology.

Pace is how fast a consciousness moves through time.

Some species perceive the world at a rate that makes our fastest soldiers look frozen. A hummingbird-equivalent species doesn't just react quickly; it lives in a slower world than ours. The gap between a heartbeat and the next is, to them, a long time. The metabolic cost of this is enormous. They burn fast and die young. On the other end, there are minds that move the way glaciers move — they think in decades, they plan across generations, they find our urgency baffling the way we find the movement of a tree baffling. Neither is better. Both are adaptive.

Filter is what the mind lets through.

An open filter means the world arrives unedited — every smell, every micro-expression, every flicker of light registers equally. This produces extraordinary sensitivity and also, frequently, overwhelming pain. Crowds. Cities. The sheer density of information in any room full of living things. A closed filter is the opposite: the mind aggressively edits the world down to what it has decided matters. These minds are precise, fast, focused. They also miss things. They miss context. They miss the person in front of them hurting. I have met both kinds. I have been both kinds, depending on the year.

Connection is how thoughts relate to each other.

A highly connected mind follows one thought into ten others. This is what we call intuition — the sudden leap from a question to an answer that seems to have no path between them. There is always a path. It is just faster than language. The other kind of mind thinks in straight lines. A then B then C. It is not less intelligent. It is differently intelligent, and often more reliable. Give me a surgeon with a linear mind over an intuitive one.

These three variables — pace, filter, connection — combine differently in every species, and differ significantly between individuals of the same species. When I encounter a new intelligence, these are the first three things I try to understand.

What feeds the mind is the second question. Which sensory channels does this species weight most heavily?

  • Vision: light, color, motion, shape
  • Sound: pitch, rhythm, tone, resonance
  • Kinetic: body position, pressure, gravity, touch
  • Semantic: language, number, pattern, logic
  • Social: micro-expression, pheromone, tension, intent

A mind that weights sound above all others navigates space through echo. A mind that weights social data above all others is reading the emotional climate of a room before anyone has spoken. Neither is more evolved. Both are complete.

Recognizable types emerge when these variables combine consistently across a population:

The quick-and-sparse minds — high pace, low connection — are outstanding at immediate physical problem-solving. They read the next second extremely well. They struggle to plan across a year.

The slow-and-dense minds — low pace, high connection — are what we call oracles in a pejorative sense. They are terrible in a firefight. They are extraordinary at seeing twenty years ahead. Given enough time and peace, they tend to be right.

The open-and-fast minds are sensory extremists. The best sensors in any environment. Also the most unstable under duress.

One more thing that took me years to understand: most minds are not fixed. The variables shift based on conditions. Sam's perception accelerates under threat. Marcus's social awareness shuts off when someone he loves is in danger. Eevi's connection collapses into pure linear logic when she is exhausted. This is not malfunction. This is adaptation. When we call someone "a different person" under stress, we are observing this shift and not understanding what we are seeing.


How a body works

The body is not separate from the mind. This is the most common mistake in field assessment — treating the physical characteristics of a species as background information rather than as the same document written in a different language.

What it is made of. Density. Elasticity. Permeability. A calcified exoskeleton and a rubbery dermis are not just different armor ratings. They tell you where this species came from and what killed their ancestors. Hard skin evolved under predation pressure or radiation. Elastic tissue evolved in environments with unpredictable physical stress. The body is a record of everything that tried to kill the species before now.

How it runs. Heart size. Lung capacity. Circulatory pressure. These determine not just endurance but temperament. A species running at higher internal cardiovascular pressure than ours — that affects behavior, aggression threshold, emotional volatility. The deep-pressure species of WPU-3710 have cardiovascular systems built for environments that would kill us. They are not aggressive. They are under constant physiological strain. That is a different thing.

Its shape. The geometry of how the body interacts with the world. Sensory organ size. Surface area relative to mass. Scale. A very large surface area dissipates heat — that species is built for hot environments. Tiny sensory organs that are highly concentrated suggest a species that evolved in the dark, or underground, or somewhere that selected for depth over breadth.

Physical traits are almost never static. They respond to conditions.

A species with skin that hardens under sudden impact is not always armored. In ordinary conditions they may be soft. A species whose lungs expand under oxygen deprivation does not normally breathe that way. The body has modes. When we observe a species in one context and assume that is their fixed state, we make mistakes that get people killed.


Reading both together

Every physical capability costs something. Hard skin is heavy. A high-pressure cardiovascular system is demanding. Enhanced sensory organs are vulnerable to overload. There are no free enhancements in biology — the debt always comes due somewhere. When assessing a new species, I look for the trade-off. If I cannot find it, I have not looked hard enough.

Example: a species with compressible cartilage, a massive heart, and high-pressure veins. They can survive crushing environmental pressure that would kill anything else. But remove the pressure — bring them to sea level — and the system fails. The same biology that keeps them alive in their world kills them in ours. That is not a weakness. That is a life shaped by its place.

What I have come to understand, after enough contact situations, is that this framework is not primarily useful for threat assessment. It is useful for empathy. When I understand why a species processes sound rather than light, or why they are overwhelming in close social proximity, or why they become dangerous only when a specific threshold is crossed — I stop being afraid of them. And when I stop being afraid of them, I become useful.

That is the only reason I wrote this down.
